Absolute Return Portfolio Construction

The funds chosen for each of the Alternative Portfolios have historically proven themselves in all market conditions and have generated positive returns for our clients despite the bear markets of recent years. Unlike mutual funds, which focus on their exposure to specific markets, these hedge funds can adopt strategies to suit current market conditions, or select a more appropriate area to move into.

“Hedge Funds” are an important asset class for high net worth individuals, pension funds and institutional investors. At end of 2007, the total asset under hedge fund management around the globe was US$2.5 trillion. The primary aim of hedge funds is to reduce volatility and risk while attempting to preserve capital and deliver positive returns under all market conditions. Hedge fund portfolios have exhibited a low correlation with traditional asset classes, suggesting that hedge funds can play an important role in strategic allocation.

These funds are also known as absolute return strategies or funds and register real returns, not relative returns such as mutual funds. Mutual funds performances are usually benchmarked to some common indices. As long as the fund performs relatively better than the index, be it positive or negative returns, the manager has done well.

Your choice of funds should ultimately be based on your tolerance to risk, your expected time frame, and the rate at which you wish your investment to grow.

Portfolio Optimisation Service

FOS is a unique offering managed by Richmond’s highly skilled investment team that allocates your money based on the following key strategies:

  • Selecting the fastest moving funds
  • Switching of fund allocation to the markets
  • Timing the buy and sell of funds to maximize the time spent in the up trend and minimize the effects of a downtrend with the use of stop-losses.
  • Locking in profits to protect the investment when the market place is volatile

Whilst your investments using the FOS are rising, stop losses are constantly placed at significant points identified by our investment team. We will keep raising the stop losses until the investment’s value breaches this level, after which there will be a subsequent shift to other performing areas, or to cash when there are no positive markets.

Pension Fund Management

From large multinational organisations through to smaller boutique companies, Richmond manages a range of different corporate pension funds for clients around the world.

Richmond has vast in-depth experience in the field of protective arrangements for clients. In respect of pensions / benefit schemes, we provide one of the most secured arrangements in the market. The assets of the members are ring fenced at all times from the employer's company and no company or individual, may withdraw funds without the written consent of the appointed Trustees and the confirmation from the Custodian. Furthermore, the appointed Fund Manager does not have any access to the pension fund assets.

The probity of the arrangement is underwritten by a time-honoured system of “separation of duties” whereby the Trustees, Custodian, and Fund Manager are independent of each other, and separately audited. In particular Richmond never handles client monies - the Scheme contributions are passed directly to the Scheme’s separate bank account with the Trustee, or at the behest of the Trustee, directly to the Scheme’s appointed Custodian before investment dealing instructions are issued by the Fund Manager. Richmond will then actively manage the pension fund assets deploying our own special techniques to meet the pension scheme investment objectives.

Phuket has been a favoured area; it will be Asia’s premier retirement location and is gradually changing into what is believed will be Asia’s most chic island.

Australia is another area that is currently an excellent opportunity – Australia is the real young country similar to where the U.S. was probably 30 years ago.

Richmond has undertaken extensive research on the various states of property cycles including Residential, Industrial, Commercial, Farming and Land. Opportunities abound in strong areas and there are bargains in areas that have “must have” sales.

Certain areas of Perth are going to go through a re-rating due to a change in local planning rules which will translate into an upgrading of status and with it great price appreciation. Adelaide in certain suburbs is set to roar for the next 5 years. Richmond’s partners are on the ground now with plenty of opportunities.
